The aim of this study is to contemplate the backgrounds with which Landor, one of the English Romantic Poets, came to be an ardent admirer of Napoleon Bonaparte. He, in his youth, was at open defiance of authority, and held a sympathetic faith in the French Revolution as a rebellion against repression. An epic Gebir implies invasion of the French Republic by the allied powers will end in failure, that is, allegorically depict that the old world of conquest and monarchy is destined to become extinct. And in the pastoral subplot, Landor offers an image of Napoleon as the ideal political leader of the future, representing Napoleon as a conqueror of kings, a deliverer of men and a redeemer of a new world, that is, an embodiment of the ideas of the French Revolution.
