This article is an investigation into the way gender discourse has been constructed in contemporary South Korea. Gender studies in South Korea recognize the emergence of feminist literary studies in the 1990s against the background of labor resistance and labor movement against mobilization and exploitation during the modernization project of the 1960s, and the gathering strength of the democracy, student, worker and women's movements during the repressive military government of the 1980s. However, many problems remain to the realization of a gender-equal society, as gender problems are addressed in order to face the demands of an era of social change. In this article I consider the factors blocking its accomplishment.
