One antecedent study reports that the significant changes of subjects' mood states on the POMS (=Profile of Mood States, a psychological test) scores are observed between before and after listening to music. The study confined its subjects to female students and its used pieces of music to sedative ones, whereas this study, taking male students as subjects and introducing exciting pieces, verified the differences between the sexes and between the types of music in the changes of mood states by listening to music. The result is that female students have significantly greater changes of mood states than male ones after listening to sedative music, and a significant increase on one of the measures of POMS, "Vigor", is observed after male students listen to exciting music, whereas it isn't observed at all in the cases of sedative one and the control.
