The yield stress of martensitic 8mass% (%) Ni steel was investigated by means of tensile testing, and then the strengthening mechanism of martensitic steels containing solute Cu was discussed. The steels exhibited lath-martensitic single structure containing a high density of dislocation. The dislocation density of the martensitic steels increases with increasing Cu content. The yield stress of the martensitic 8%Ni-Cu steels is gradually increased with increasing Cu content. However, the increment of the yield stress by Cu addition was much smaller in the martensitic 8%Ni-Cu steels than in the ferritic Cu steels whose strength is dominated only by the solid solution strengthening. This suggests that the strengthening in the martensitic steel can not be given by the summation of the solid solution strengthening and the dislocation strengthening. On the other hand, the yield stress in the martensitic 8%Ni-Cu steels was successfully explained only by dislocation strengthening estimated by the Bailey-Hirsch equation. This result indicates that the solid solution strengthening by Cu is invalid and the yield stress is mainly dominated by dislocation strengthening in the case of the martensitic steel with high dislocation density.
