Diapausing pupae of Papilio machaon were compared with those of P. xuthus for their seasonal changes in supercooling capacity, freezing-tolerance and haemolymph cryoprotectant level. Haemolymph glycerol levels of both species reached a maximum (20 mg/ml) in mid-November. The high levels of glycerol were maintained until mid-February or mid-March and decreased thereafter. Trehalose levels fluctuated between 10 and 15 mg/ml during the winter. In spite of such similarity in carbohydrate metabolism, two species were distinctly different in freezing-tolerance. P. machaon became tolerant to freezing at -30℃ in mid-November with the increased level of glycerol. P. xuthus was freezing-intolerant throughout the overwintering period, its supercooling point dropped to about -25℃ represented the lower lethal temperature.
