Open bite is thought to be one of the most intractable cases in orthodontic treatment. As a result, extensive extrusion of anterior teeth or excessive mandibular rotation due to orthognathic surgery, recession, and/or relapse of frontal gingiva have become problems occasionally. In order to treat this open bite, MEAW is applied for the purpose of molar upright with a lot of good results. The purpose of this study was to examine and compare the effects of MEAW and those of ideal archwire, both combined with vertical elastics, on open bite. From the results, it was suggested : 1. MEAW has a high degree of freedom for individual tooth movement as compared with ideal archwire because Lloop invested between teeth successfully reduces the force which was applied to the teeth involved through tip back bends and the use of tip back bends. 2. A reversed direction of rotation force which was applied to the teeth between premolars was evident in the case of MEAW and the reversed site was noted between molars in the case of ideal archwire. 3. MEAW is considered to be more suitable for treating open bite to make the posterior teeth upright because it effectively rotates teeth distally through the force of vertical elastics which were also used in combination with ideal archwire.
