Relationship between maxillofacial morphology and perioral muscle function

The aims of this study were to investigate the relationship among maxillofacial morphology and maximal voluntary lip sealing pressure, perioral muscle activity ratio, and muscle fatigue and recovery of the muscle, and to discuss an objective estimation for myofunctional therapy. The following results were obtained. 1. Fifty adult male volunteers were divided into 4 groups. Group A : average face type and anterior tooth axis showing labial tipping. Group B : average face type and normal anterior tooth axis. Group C : short face type. Group D : long face type. The soft tissue shape reflects the upper and lower anterior tooth axes and lower facial height. 2. Group B showed the highest maximal voluntary lip sealing pressure. 3. Perioral muscle activity ratios of Groups A and B were almost equal. In Groups C and D, the lower facial height is related to the activity of the lower orbicularis oris muscle and mentalis muscle. 4. Muscle fatigue and recovery of the perioral muscles related to the anterior tooth axis, antero-posterior position of the maxilla and mandible, and lower facial height. This suggests that maximal voluntary lip sealing pressure, muscle activity ratio, muscle fatigue and recovery relate to the maxillofacial morphology respectively and that myofunctional therapy needs careful evaluation.
