Effect of chewing type nipple to growth of jaw bones : Evidence from size of arch length discrepancy

The effect of the chewing type nipple using the arch length discrepancy as a scale was studied in 13 children of Hellman's dental age IIA aged between 3.8 and 4.6 years. They had been breast fed to an average age of 3.5 months and fed by bottle with chewing type nipples to an average age of 12.4 months. As control, a regular type nipple group consisted of 16 children of dental age IIA aged from 3.9 to 5.5 years. They had been breast fed to an average age of 1.6 months, and fed with bottles with regular nipples to an average age of 14.6 months. The size of all the deciduous teeth and the maxillary and mandibular dental arch length were measured on dental casts of the children. The required space (RS), the available arch length (AAL), and the arch length discrepancy (ALD) in maxillary arch were 71.7±3.5mm, 79.1±3.8 and 7.5±3.7 respectively, and in mandibular arch, 66.6±3.0, 72.5±4.8 and 5.9±3.6 in the chewing type nipple group. They were 72.9±4.0, 77.3±4.1, 4.5±3.7, 68.6±2.8, 71.4±3.2 and 2.8±3.7 respectively in the regular type nipple group. The difference in arch length discrepancy (ALD) between the two groups was 3.0mm in the maxillary dental arch and 3.1mm in the mandibular arch ; both were significantly larger in the chewing type nipple group (t-test, P<0.05). Hence, it is suggested that the chewing type nipple is an effective means for preventing the babies from undergrowth of the jaws.
