The purpose of this study is to investigate fluoride concentration in plaque and saliva and the numbers of Streptococcus mutans in plaque in five years old preschool children. This study was carried out in the three different preschools : one of them was a control group (CT group) and the other two groups carried out a fluoride mouthrinsing program in preschool. The weekly fluoride mouthrinsing group (WF group) used 0.2% NaF solution and the daily fluoride mouthrinsing group (DF group) used 0.05% NaF solution, both groups stopped fluoride mouthrinsing more than 28 days before the beginning of this study. In these three groups, the same dental health program was performed without fluoride mouthrinsing. We investigated the change since the fluoride mouthrinsing program started of fluoride concentration in plaque and saliva in the week in these 3 groups. The results obtained were as follow : 1. In DF group, fluoride concentration in plaque was significantly increased 1 and 7 days after treatment, and fluoride concentration in saliva was increased significantly 7 days after treatment. 2. In WF group, fluoride concentration in plaque and saliva was kept at the same level. 3. In both fluoride mouthrinsing groups, numbers of S.mutans in plaque were not changed during the experimental period. These results suggested that daily fluoride mouthrinsing program could increase fluoride concentration in plaque and saliva, but did not decrease the numbers of S. mutans in plaque.
