The medical applicability of the three-dimensional imaging is steadily increasing with advances in computer technology. The goal of this study is to establish a method for integrating the maxillofacial 3-dimensional CT image (3D-CT image) and the 3-dimensional dental-surface image (3D dental-surface image) for the sake of obtaining maxillofacial 3-dimensional images applicable in the field of dentistry. The study produced the following results. 1. The 3D-CT image and the 3D dental-surface image were integrated on the same coordinates. This image makes precisely discernible dental structures that can easily be obscure in CT images. 2. The least squares method was employed to match images in the digital registration process. Ceramic balls were used as markers. Consequently, the registration process was automated and required no human guidance. 3. Since the integrated image (3D maxillofacial-dental image) provide 3D coordinate data, this is applicable to quantitative-analysis research and to surgical-orthodontic treatment simulations in dentistry.
