Fibulins are extracellular proteins which belong to the family of proteins containing long tandem arrays of epidermal growth factor(EGF)-like modules with a consensus sequence for calcium binding. At present two fibulins are known, fibulin-1 and fibulin-2. Fibulin-1 is secreted as a monomer and has a dumbell-like structure about 33nm long. Recombinant expression of fibulin-2 demonstrated its assembly into elongated dimers which are connected by a disulfide bridge. Fibulins bind several extracellular matrix proteins(fibronectin, nidogen, fibrillin etc.), which in most cases requires calcium. They are expressed in a wide variety of tissues already during embryonic development and assemble into extracellular microfibrils.
