PURPOSE ; The SSL (Structural Self-Lifting) implant was developed by Shimoda T., in 1994,to provide osteogenesis where vertical bone height was insufficient.The aim of this study, was to use a new dental implant several effects of which were investigated. MATERIALS AND METHODS ; Twenty male beagle dogs with a minimum weight of 9 kg were used. As experimental animals, a curved incision was made for placement of the implant according to the alveolar crest of the posterior maxilla. The periosteum was shown by a blunt dissection to expose only the palatal vault. An insertion hole was drilled through the sinus to the buccal direction, and the membrane was then elevated from the floor. The SSL implant was placed against the sinus without perforating the membrane. An inner screw was then advanced to a length of 4 mm toward the sinus to elevate the membrane simultaneously. The animals used were observed in groups of 10 in the 2nd to 56th week. RESULTS ; The results of this study show the phase of bone formation grossly divided into four. The process can be seen in the creation phase from 2 to 8 weeks, remodeling phase from 8 to 16 weeks, maturing phase from 16 to 32 weeks, and finally atrophic phase from 40 weeks or later. These observations indicate that the acquisition of a new generated osseous formation can be established after 16 weeks of implantation. Consequently, complete osseous healing occurred in the newly created socket to elevate the membrane after 32 weeks. CONCLUSION ; The use of the SSL implant has many expectations and possibilities for clinical application.
