Water, acetone, ethanol, dioxane, and DMSO solutions containing HEMA (7-40mol%), acetone solutions containing HPMA (7-40mol%) and water, and acetone solutions containing GM (7-40mol%) were prepared as dentin primers in order to investigate the effect of types of solvents and monomers on surface treatment of air dried and blot dried etched dentin with organic solvent dentin primers. Also, solvent alone (controls) and l00mol% HEMA, HPMA, and GM were used as dentin primers. After air dried or blot-dried bovine dentin which had been etched with 10% phosphoric acid gel, was treated with dentin primers and then dentin primers were dried for 5sec. or 30sec. the bond strengths of the composite resin with the experimental lighted-cured bonding agent (50wt% BisGMA-50 wt% HEMA) and commercial bonding agents (LB, MP, Mac 10 and FB) to etched dentin were measured after immersion in 37℃ water for 1 day. Also, the resindentin interface of specimens that were immersed in 6mol/L HCI for 30sec., and further immersed in 1% NaOCl for 60min. were examined by SEM after the shear bond test. The results were as follows : 1. Although the bond strength of the composite resin with the experimental bonding agents after priming with 7mol% HEMA-water primer, 20mol% HEMA-DMSO and 40mol% HEMA-DMSO to air dried etched dentin were higher than those of the controls, but there was no significant difference between the bond strength and air-duration of dentin priming. The hybrid layers with about 2 μm thickness were formed regardless of dentin priming procedure, concentration of the monomers and kind of the solvents, but their thickness became less than 1 μm or they almost disappeared after immersion in 1% NaOCl. 2. The hybrid layers were formed on the bonded dentin interface of blot dried etched dentin specimens regardless of kind of dentin primers and concentration of HEMA and their thickness was 3〜4 μm. It was thicker than in air dried etched dentin specimens. In the specimens with bonding strength more than 10MPa, the hybrid layers were observed even after immersion in 1% NaOCl. 3. As to the effect of surface treatment of dentin primers containing HEMA, the blot dried technique showed higher bond strength than in air dried technique. The dentin primers consisting of water-soluble organic solvents such as acetone, ethanol or dioxane with low boiling point regardless of kind of solvents showed high bonding strength. 4. It was found that HPMA with insolubility in water was available as dentin primers by using the organic solvent such as acetone, ethanol or dioxane. 5. The effect of surface treatment with different kind of dentin primers to blot dried etched dentin were different due to the bonding agents on the market. It became apparent that the sufficient bonding strength weren't obtained in case of poor affinity of the monomers of the dentin primers for the monomers of the bonding agents.
