The mechanism for yeast-mycelial transition in the dimorphic pathogenic fungus Candida albicans is closely related with the pathogenesis and morphogenesis. In Candida albicans, mid-exponential phasecells growing in the budding form cannot be immediately induced to form mycelia. However, the organism pretreated by starvation form mycelia. Yeast growth of mid-exponential phase cells was inhibited by addition of metabolic inhibitors such as hydroxyurea, and deoxyglucose to the growth medium. Metabolic inhibition may be the first step necessary for yeast-mycelial transition.
