The thermal effects on the marginal sealing of the following castable ceramics were evaluated used in combination with PANAVIA21 (P21) or Super-Bond C & B (SB) as resin cements : an apatite system (CASMIC : CAS), a mica system (OCC), a Au-Ag-Pd alloy (CASTWELL : CW), crown and brige resin (CESEAD II : HR). 1. Bond strength of the two types of resin cement to various restorative materials differed according to the measurement temperature and adhesives. The measurement temperature more markedly affected SB than P21. 2. The measurement temperature affected the elastic modulus (EM) for both P21 and SB. The EM for SB more significantly decreased. 3. The thermal expansion coefficient (TEC) for each restorative material and cement was the smallest for OCC, followed in order by CAS, CW, HR, P21,and SB. The coefficient for CAS (8.96×10^<-6>/℃) was the closest to that for bovine enamel (11.0×10^<-6>/℃). 4. Concerning marginal sealing, the incidence of marginal leakage was slight at a thermal cycling of 500,but about 50% of samples at a thermal cycling of 1000 showing leakage. Results differed between SB and P21. Using P21,marginal sealing was the most marked for CAS, followed in order by OCC, CW, and HR. 5. The internal stress in the cement layer during heating and cooling was calculated from the EM for resin cement and the TEC for each restorative material. The tensile stress was the highest during cooling of HR-P21. 6. The difference of TEC between tooth and the restorative materials, and the EM of the cements are important factors to get ideal marginal sealing. 7. The castable ceramics that has approximate value of TEC to tooth has good marginal sealing. Moreover, the marginal sealing can be improved by using cement which has high EM.
