Experimental visible light-activated materials were prepared and evaluated with regard to physical and chemical properties and histopathologically regardirg tissue irritation to investigate applicability as a resin splint. Experimental resin splints were composed of base resin/polymer beads/filler. Two synthesized urethane tetramethacrylates, U4 and X4,were diluted with TEGDMA, and used as the base resin system. Two types of acrylic resin beads of varying sizes, Poly MMA (#250) and Poly (EMA MMA) (#300), were used as polymer beads system. The filler system is composed of silanated microfine silica. 1. Experimental resin splints showed the highest transverse strength and elastic modulus when the ratio of base resin (X4)/polymer beads (#300)/filler was 57/28/15 (wt%). 2. Resin splints containing #300 polymer beads showed increased consistency until two days after preparation, and showed suitable plasticity for clinical use. 3. Transverse strengths of resin splints after being immersed in 37℃ water for 14 and 30 days decreased slightly, while the elastic modulus was unchanged even after 30-days immersion. 4. Resin splints showed bond strengths to etched enamel ranging from 12 to 18 MPa, and there was no significant reduction after being immersed in 37℃ water for 14 and 30 days. 5. The curing depth increased with light exposure duration (30 and 60 seconds). The U4-based resin splint (U4-300) exposed for 30s showed a higher curing depth than the X4-based resin splint (X4-300), whereas there was no significant difference in curing depth in either resin splint exposed for 60s. 6. The resin splint, X4-300,showed greater hardness (KHN : 19.9) than U4-300 (KHN : 16.4). 7. SEM observation of the fractured surface of the resin splint containing #300 polymer beads revealed that polymer beads swelled and produced an interpenetrating polymer network in the matrix. For specimens fractured after bond test, the fractured interface between enamel and bonding agent was observed, and demineralized structure and resin tags were visible in the enamel and resin sides, respectively. 8. In the experimental investigation comparing the histological reaction to these experimental resin splint with those of light-activated composite resin and self-cured acrylic resin embedded in the subcutaneous tissues of rats, these experimental resin splints induced a response similar to that of commercial resin materials but there was less irritative tissue reaction. These results suggest that the experimental light-activated resin, base resin (X4)/polymer beads (#300)/filler; 57/28/15 (wt%), would be useful as a splint material for fixation of luxated deciduous teeth in clinical practice.
