To explore the relation between pulp irritability and marginal leakage of dental filling materials, pulpal reaction was histopathologically examined using materials which have relatively higher pulp irritability among filling materials, as well as several materials that show very little irritation. 1. In experiment I, pulpal reaction induced by eugenol cement and adhesive-resin cement was slight. Consequently, pulp irribtability was weak after exposure to either cement. Ionomer cement and carboxylate cement showed approximatel intermediate grades of pulpal reaction. Silicate cement induced the strongest pulpal reaction, suggesting strong irritability. 2. In experiment II, it was suggested that the relatively intense pulpal reaction induced by silicate cement reflected in response to marginal leakage rather than pulpal iritability of silicate cement itself. Based upon all the results obtained, it was concluded that for precise evaluation of pulp irritability in response to dental filling materials that the sufficient consideration of marginal leakage is conceivably important. Long-term observation is also important.
