Studies on permanent tooth formation were made by using panoramic radiographs 1023 films of children (male 488,female535) between with aged 2.6 and to 12.5 years of age who visited the pediatric dentistry department of Fukuoka Dental College. In this study, the dental age was determined by estimating permanent tooth formation except the third molars on the left side of the lower and upper jaws in children according to the developmental criterion of Nolla and Moorrees et al. The following information was obtained from estimation of the average chronological ages for the developmental stages of teeth and the sum of dental maturity score. The results obtained were as follows : 1) The assessments by Nolla's tooth formation stages and those by Moorrees et al. tooth formation stages showed the same growth rates which were about 5 to 20 months on the growth stages respectively with a significant growth by the t-test. 2) There was a statistically significant difference in sex difference in both Nolla's tooth formation stages and those of Moorees et al. showing faster tendency of tooth development in females than in males. 3) Comparison of the present findings with those obtained in other studies, the formation of incisors was much slower, but canine and premolars developed at the same rate or slightly faster in this study. 4) A new approach to evalute the dental age conversed from maturity score from tooth formation stages of Nolla and Moorrees et al. were performed. The growth curve showed a line similar to Scammon's general growth curve. 5) The analysis of relationship between total maturity score and chronological age by using the evaluation method of Nolla and Moorrees et al. showed high correlation coefficients (r>0.9). Also, the regression equation for dental age estimation was presented. 6) Comparison of the 14-tooth and 7-tooth systems, revealed sufficient precision even in the 7-tooth system, whence Nolla's 7-tooth system together with percentile table of total score was recommended due to clinical simplification. In conclusion, the regression equation for dental age estimation was a useful diagnostic system in forensic dentistry and pediatric endocrinopathies as well as pediatric dentistry and orthodontics.
