Experimental studies were undertaken in immature rat teeth to investigate the relationship between root development and the prognosis in incomplete luxation. The experimental incomplete luxations were induced at 1/2,root formation, 2/3 root formation, 3/4 root formation, using a luxation device designed by the author. Histopathological studies and SEM observation of pulpal tissue and root formation in rat molars with partially formed roots after incomplete luxation were conducted and evaluated. 1. The upper first molars of rats (M_1) showed root development of 1/2 at 3 weeks after birth (group 1) , and 2/3 at 6 weeks after birth (group 2) , 3/4 at 8 weeks after birth (group 3). 2. In group 1,incomplete luxation was induced by 1.5kg pull force. In teh group 2,incomplete luxation was induced by 2.5kg pull force. In group 3,incomplete luxation was induced by 3.5kg pull force. 3. The rats were sacrificed immediately after suvgery, between the and a fter 1 week, 2 weeks, 4 weeks, 8 weeks to compare histopathological and SME findings experimental groups and control groups. The following results were obtained. In group 1,greater thickening of the dentin was seen compared to that in control group starting 4 weeks after experimental trauma. Irregular dentin formation, calcification of the pulp and pulp necrosis were not observed 8 weeks after trauma. However, thickening of the dentin, irregular dentin formation, calcification and stricture of the pulp were observed from 1〜2 weeks after luxation. In general, pulp reactions after luxation in group 2 and group 3 were more intense than those in group 1. It is suggested that the more complete the formation of the root. The greater the effects on the pulp in incomplete luxation, the while the less complete the formation of the root. The stronger the effects on root development.
