Three types of hydroxyalkyl methacrylates (HAMA) and Bisphenol A dimethacrylates (BisDMA) were synthesized and the photo-cured bonding agents containing HAMA (HEMA, HBMA, HHeMA and HDMA) and BisDMA (BisGMA, BisGMAF, BisMEPP and BisMPPP) were prepared in order to examine the formation mechanism of the resin-reinforced dentin layer and its effect on the bonding of composite resins to etched dentin. The physical properties (contact angle, viscosity, surface tension, polymerization shrinkage, water sorption, transverse strength and elastic modulus) and the bond strengths of bonding agents to dentin treated with 10-3 solution were measured. The bond strengths of HAMA-BisGMA after being immersed in 37℃ water for 1 day decreased with the increase in the carbon number in the alkyl groups of HAMA and the bond strength of HEMA-BisGMA was statistically higher than that in the others. For HEMA-BisDMA, the bond strengths of HEMA-BisGMAF after being immersed in 37℃ water for 1 day and 3 months and after being thermal cycled were statistically higher than that in the others. The bond strength of HEMA-BisDMA was greatly dependent upon the polymerization shrinkage but not dependent upon the penetration coefficient calculated from the results of contact angle, viscosity and surface tension, transverse strength, elastic modulus and water sorption. The resin-reinforced dentin layers with about 1 μm thickness at the interface between HEMA-BisDMA and treated dentin were visible with SEM.
