Effects of CO_2 and NaHCO_3 on the mycelial growth in Candida albicans were examined. Candida albicans grew in the mycelial form when the organisms were exposed to the atmosphere containing 1 to 40% CO_2 at 27 to 37℃ on a solid medium. Bicarbonate ions stimulated the formation of germ tubes in a liquid medium. Bicarbonate ions in the liquid midium containing proline, thioproline and sodium bicarbonate could be replaced by sodium lionleate for the formation of germ tubes when the cells were inoculated in the medium at the concentration of 10^5 CFU/ml. Germ tube formation in the liquid medium containing methionine was observed regardless of the presence or absence of bicarbonate salt. Bicarbonate salt labelled with the radio-isotope was taken up more into the whole cells with germ tubes than into the yeast cells.
