To clarify the physiological role of the frog geniohyoideus, the elastic property of this muscle was investigated by measuring its extension and oscillation, and the findings obtained were compared with those obtained on the sartorius muscle. The geniohyoideus was an extensive muscle being stronger than the sartorius with an increase in weighing load. In general, the elastic system of the skeletal muscle consists of a parallel elastic component (PEC) and series one (SEC) from the relation of the contractile component. Oscillation appeared in a completely relaxed state after a twitch of the geniohyoideus and oscillation during a relaxing phase of twitch were distinguished by treatment with some drugs such as trypsin, collagenase, caffeine and dantrolene. The former oscillation was considered to be caused by PEC with an increase in superficial or internal calcium ions of the muscle fibers and the latter to be caused by SEC with a decrease in calcium ions. Quantitatively, the PEC was more oscillative than the SEC. As compared with the sartorius, both PEC and SEC of the geniohyoideus were really extensive and oscillative. In conclusion, the well-developed elastic system of the geniohyoideus might be one of the most important factors for demostration of orobasal function.
