Silicone impression material was inserted into the excretory duct of canine submaxillary glands. After the operation, a discharged wound was made on the 2th, 4th, 8th and 16th week. Such injured submaxillary glands were examined by the histopathological and histochemical methods on 7 and 14 day post-discharged wounding. The histopathological and histochemical findings obtained on the injured submaxillary glands are reported. Histopathological findings : After the insertion of impression material into the excretory ducts, atrophy and disappearance of the acini, expansion of intercalated, striated and interlobular ducts, and further proliferation in the inflammatory granulation tissue were observed. After the preparation of the discharged wound, the expansion and regeneration of the acini, the reduction of intercalated, striated and interlobular ducts, and decrease of the granulation tissue were observed. Histochemical findings : The capillaries of the control showed alkaline phosphatase activity. After the insertion of impression material, the number of capillaries showing enzyme activity was increased. The faint enzyme activity was observed in the interlobular ducts on the 8th and 16th weeks after the insertion of impression material. After the preparation of the discharged wound, the number of capillaries with the enzyme activity was decreased. On the other hand, the faint enzyme activity in the interlobular ducts disappeared. The high activity of acid phosphatase was noticed in the striated and interlobilar ducts of the control. After the insertion of impression material, the enzyme activity in the striated and interlobular ducts was decreased gradually. However, the degenerated and necrotized acini with the present operation had higher enzyme activity. However, after the preparation of the discharged wound, the enzyme activities in the striated and interlobular ducts were recovered. In addition, the enzyme activity was not observed in the above acini. Intense activity of succinata dehydrogenase was seen in the intercalated, striated and interlobular ducts of the control. However, after the insertion of impression material, the enzyme activity in the above ducts was decreased. When the discharged wound was prepared, the decreased enzyme activity was recovered again. Although the high activity of lactate dehydrogenase was observed in the intercalated, striated and interlobular ducts, this enzyme activity in each duct was decreased after the impression-treatment of the duct. On the 8th and 16th week after the insertion, the faint activity of the enzyme was observed in the inflammatory granulation tissue. After the preparation of the discharged wound, the enzyme activity in the intercalated, striated and interlobular ducts was recovered, but the activity was not observed in the granulation tissue.
