The inclination of the condylar head, and its relationship with maxillofacial morphology, was examined in the Japanese. Determinations of statistical significance (chi-square test and Student's t-test), and multivariate analysis (multidimensional quantification Type III), were conducted on data obtained from cephalograms and T.M.J. cephalometric laminagraphs taken on the initial visits of 281 patients (97 males and 184 females) to the Orthodontic Clinic of the Matsumoto Dental College Hospital. No difference was observed between the sexes in the incidence of three types of bilateral condylar inclination (vertical, sagittal and right-left mixed). The FMA, the gonial angle, and the ramus angle all showed significantly large values in females than in males. In terms of gross numbers, the incidence of vertical condylar inclination decreased, and that of sagittal condylar inclination increased, with age. The significance of these trends, however, could not be verified statistically. In males, brachyfacial morphology corresponded more highly with sagittal inclination than with the other two condylar types. Skeletal III morphology also tended to be more associated with mixed inclination than with the other two condylar types. In females, dolichofacial morphology showed a higher correspondence with mixed inclination than with the other two condylar types.
