Results of the present study showed that heat stimulation was the best method to determine analgesic effect of acupuncture. Using this method, three supplemental drugs (nitrous oxide, pentazocine and diazepam) were tested whether these drugs can improve the clinical disadvantage of acupuncture which include weak analgesic effect, slow onset and delayed peak time. Following results were obtained : (1) By inhalation of 20% nitrous oxide in oxygen together with electric acupuncture, analgesic effect of acupuncture was increased significantly, and its onset and peak time were decreased significantly. (2) Intramuscular injection of pentazocine (15 mg) showed different effects on acupuncture effect in the trigeminal nerve, and the cervical nerve areas. Analgesic effect of acupuncture was increased significantly in the cervical nerve area but not increased in the trigeminal nerve area. Although onset and peak time prolonged in the trigeminal nerve area, those decreased significantly in the cervical nerve area. Nausea and vomiting were frequently observed in this group. (3) Using oral diazepam (5mg) together with electric acupuncture, analgesic effect of the latter increased a little, but its onset time did not decrease, and peak time was prolonged. However, duration of analgesic effect after cessation of electric acupuncture stimulation had a tendency to prolong. The above results suggest that the best supplemental drug for electric acupuncture in dental clinic may be nitrous oxide among these three drugs.
