There have been accumulated the evidences that tissue-specific somatic stem cells have a greater capacity for differentiation than we had been expected. Among them, neural stem cells (NS cells) were reported to differentiate into various types of somatic cells other than neural cells after they were injected into adult hosts or blastocysts. To realize the mechanisms, by which they differentiated into non-neural cells, we established an in vitro system for the adipogenic differentitation of brain-derived NS cells. In this, NS cells differentiated into adipocytes via unidentifiable epithelial cells (MS cells). We speculate MS cells may be multipotent somatic stem cells capable of differentiating into both neural cells and non-neural cells.
