The skin has one of the highest hyaluronan contents among organs. In fact, skin contains nearly 50% of the total hyaluronan in a given organism, which it dynamically synthesizes and degrades with a rapid turnover rate. Both the epidermis and dermis, which are functionally and histologically distinct from, contain a high concentration of hyaluronan. And although the metabolim of skin hyaluronan has been extensively investigated over the last decade, the physiological roles of skin hyaluronan remain largely unknown. This article reviews recent developments in the study of skin hyaluronan metabolism, and discusses the possible roles of hynaluronan in skin physiology.
