Occurrence and functional significance of hyaluronan in extracellular and pericellular matrices have been extensively studied. Recently significant pools of hyaluronan were identified intracellularly, posing interesting questions to their function therein. One avenue of investigation that may assist in defining the function of intracellular hyaluronan is to identify intracellular hyaluronan-binding proteins(IHABPs). Recent studies have identified four types of IHABPs : CDC37, RHAMM/IHABP, P-32, and IHABP4. In this review, I will focus on these IHABPs which may closely relate to the biological functions of intracellular hyaluronan.
