NG2 is an integral membrane proteoglycan expressed on a variety of immature neural and mesenchymal cell types and interacts with several extracellular matrix molecules and growth factors, including types VI and V collagen and platelet-derived growth factor. Mutational analyses revealed the central portion of the extracellular domain of the NG2 core protein to be essential for the interaction between NG2 and type VI collagen. Recent studies on the expression of NG2 indicate that NG2 is expressed not only by proliferating progenitor cells, but is also present in the adult nervous system and vasculature. Studies are under way to investigate the possible role for NG2 and NG2-expressing cells in the mature tissues as well as to understand the signals that regulate proliferation and differentiation of the NG2-expressing cells.
