To improve the abrasion resistance of scaler, I manufactured several nitrated scalers and assessed the abrasion resistance of their blades. Nitrided sickle scalers with nitride-hardened N.T. blades (S.N.) were compared with new taglite sickle scaler (#11DB, the controls). Three different levels of nitriding were used : (1) S.N.30 (treated for 30 minutes), (2) S.N.60 (treated for 60 minutes) and (3)S.N.90 (for 90 minutes). The abrasion resistance of each scaler was determined using an automatic scaling apparatus, at a vertical scaling force of 500g, a scaler angle of 87 degrees, and a stroke length of 3mm. After each 10 and 1000 strokes, the scaled material was weighed, and weight differences were calculated to serve as an indicator of loss of effectiveness due to abrasion of the blades. Furthermore, the scaler blades were observed under a scanning electron microscope (SEM) before and after scaling. In addition, tensile test were conducted on each level of nitrided blade to assess its fragility. Mean worn-away amounts were not significant among the three nitrided scaler blades (S.N.30,S.N.60 and S.N.90). this indicates that the thickness of the nitrided layer affect the abrasion resistance of nitrated scalers. The tensile strength was strongest in S.N.60.
