An active fraction inducing germ tube formation of Candida albicans JCM 9061 was extracted from the same strain. The fraction was extracted using the methods for extraction of biologically active peptides described by Kangawa et al. (1983). Extraction by acid was performed on cells under five different conditions : mid-exponential phase cells, starved exponential phase cells, starved exponential phase cells with germ tubes, stationary phase cells and starved stationary phase cells. The active fraction was obtained by gel-filtration of the extracts from cells in all five conditions. The fraction had a relative molecular mass in about 1,000Da. When the active fraction at the concentration of 3.8 μg protein/ml was added to zinc medium and starved exponential phase cells were cultured in it, around 70% of cells formed germ tubes after 60min. The ability of the fraction to induce germ tube formation was lost by treatment with pronase.
