Effects of thioproline, cysteine and methionine as sulfur-containing amino acids on mycelium formation in Candida albicans were examined. Candida albicans grew in the mycellial form at 37℃ by culture in a candle jar on a solid medium containing thioproline or cysteine, when the amino acid was added to the medium at the same concentration or at lower concentrations than that of proline. When methionine was added to the solid medium at the concentration over 10^<-3>%, the organism grew in the mycelial form. When thioproline or cysteine was added to the liquid medium containing proline, sodium bicarbonate and sodium linoleate at lower concentrations than that of proline, germ tube formation was observed. When methionine was added to the same medium, it stimulated formation of germ tubes at the concentration over 10^<-5>%. Proline uptake increased accompanying with increases in the percentage of germ tube formation regardless of the kinds of sulfur-containing amino acids added.
