Changes in the gingiva and alveolar bone around the lower molars of the rat were examined using both light and scanning electron microscopy, after partial grinding of the mesial line angle of the buccal and lingual side of the crown. The following results were thereby obtained. 1. The gingiva were examined at intervals ranging from 1 day to 12 weeks after surgery. Inflammatory cell infiltration was temporarily observed beneath the epithelial layer 3 days and 5 days after surgery, and the gingival epithelia showed slight thickening 3,5 and 7 days after surgery. 2. Bone resorption by osteoclasts appeared on the alveolar crest 3 days and 5 days after surgery. The shape of the crest displayed a saw-tooth appearance. 3. Bone resorption disappeared almost completely, and the partial addition of new bone was observed 7 days after surgery. The alveolar crest was rough and uneven on the surface, and showed a more irregular shape in contrast with the control group. 4. The alveolar crest flattened, and the surface of bone became slightly smoother 10 days and 2 weeks after surgery, while many small scattered pores were observed on the surface of bone. 5. The alveolar crest increasingly flattened, and small pores remained on the surface of the bone 4,8 and 12 weeks after surgery. 6. Even if changes in the shape of the buccal side of the crown affected the gingiva only slightly, they caused morphological changes early and exerted long-term effects on the alveolar crest. 7. Morphological changes of the alveolar crest were less pronounced on the lingual side than on the buccal side. 8. The effects due to the grinding of two contiguous teeth were approximately similar to those due to the grinding of the second molar alone on both the buccal and lingual sides.
