Changes in eruption speed as well as macroscopic, radiologic and histopathological changes were examined after repeated unilateral amputation of rat lower incisors. The effects on the tooth, particularly the enamel and cells associated with enamel formation, and the dentin, and on the periodontal ligament were studied and the results acquired were as follows : 1. Acceleration of eruption occurred in the surgically treated incisor after repeated amputation. 2. The amount of eruption decreased in the untreated incisor. 3. The appearance of the surgically treated incisor became increasingly whitish and chalky relative to the increase in the number of experimental amputation. 4. Because of the acceleration of eruption, the processes of enamel formation were generally retarded in the surgically treated incisor compared to the untreated counterpart. 5. Because of the acceleration of eruption, the area of enamel matrix formation expanded more incisally, and the area of enamel maturation consequently made an incisal shift and became narrower on the surgically treated side. 6. Acceleration of the eruption rate affected the stage of enamel maturation causing the incisor on the surgically treated side to erupt with insufficient calcification. Thus, the erupted incisor had a white chalky appearance. 7. Because of the acceleration in the eruption rate, the dentin was thinner in the surgically treated incisor, and subsequently the pulp chamber was enlarged. 8. Fluorescent labelling confirmed that dentin formed at the same periods moved more incisally in the surgically treated incisor, compared with the untreated incisor. 9. The effects on periodontal tissues from the acceleration of eruption were generally slight.
