The effects of intraperitoneal injections of phenytoin (PHT) with and without vitamin D(V.D.) on the mandibular-molar, -incisor and condylar cartilage of the rat were examined using a light microscope. Four-week-old rats (Wistar line) were used as materials. Five percent PHT was used at each volume of 0.2,0.6 and 1.0ml/rat・kg/day, and 20 IU V.D. was given in a volume of 0,0001ml/rat・kg/day. Both reagents were injected continuously daily for 2-, 6-, 10- and 15-weeks. No changes were defected in the groups given the minimum volume of PHT (0.2ml/rat・kg/day). In the groups given the intermediate volume of the reagent (0.6ml/rat・kg/day), a disorder in arrangement of odontoblasts of the mandibular-molar and -incisor, vacuolar degeneration, dismutation in width of predentin and a high level of vascularity in the vessel of dental pulp were observed after 2 and 6 weeks. However, in the groups given the same volume, partial noncalcified areas in the primary dentin, and many resorption cavities in the root of mandibular molar were observed after 10 and 15 weeks. In addition, the zones of maturation and of cartilage hypertrophy in the condylar cartilage were thickened, and the arrangement and shape of hypertrophied cartilage were irregular. In the groups given the maximum volume (1.0ml/rat・kg/day), the effect of the reagent was stronger. In the groups given PHT together with V.D., no such changes were observed.
