The four collagen receptor integrins are structurally and functionally distinct when compared to other members of the integrin family. The collagen receptors have partially overlapping expression pattern but they have differences in their ability to recognize collagen subtypes and also in their signaling function. The collagen receptor knockout mice have been used to confirm the in vivo relevance of some of the cell culture observations.
