This study is aimed at formulating a light-cured composite resin with adequate fluoride releasing and mechanical properties for dental application. Six types of fluorides were added to UDMA-based visible light-cured resins (TEGDMA/UDMA and EDEDMA/UDMA monomer systems). The effect of the solubility of the fluoride and hydrophilic/hydrophobic nature of the base monomer system were investigated by measuring the amount of released fluoride and the mechanical properties of the fluoride-containing experimental composite resins. The rate of weight change by water sorption of hydrophilic EDEDMA-containing EDEDMA/UDMA-based composite resins was greater than that of TEGDMA/UDMA-based composite resins. The amount of released fluoride depended on the solubility of the fluoride in water. The hydrophilic EDEDMA/UDMA monomer system containing water-soluble fluorides (FBNa and FBAm) released the greatest amount of fluoride. The transverse strengths of the FBNa or FBAm-containing composite resins were lower than those with other types of fluoride, but the compressive strengths were similar to all other types of fluoride. Thus, the amount and rate of the fluoride release and the mechanical properties of the composite resins depended on the solubility of the fluoride sources and the balance of hydrophilic/hydrophobic nature of the base monomer system. Proper mixing ratios of the above components should result in the ideal composite resin with the most adequate fluoride release and mechanical properties.
