new paragraph (indent) The purpose of this study is to evaluate the accuracy of the repositioning of the maxillary segment by the Le Fort I osteotomy, using the double splint method in facial asymmetry cases. Eighty-two patients, 17 males and 65 females, who underwent the orthognathic surgery performed by the same surgeon, were examined. The three-dimensional positions of the maxillary central incisor and the bilateral first molars were measured on pre-surgical, model-surgical, and post-surgical dental models with the model platform device. The changes in maxillary positions by the model-surgery and the actual surgery were calculated in the maxillary deviation group, the mandibular deviation group, and the non-deviation group respectively, and statistically evaluated and compared to the Wilcoxon signed-ranks test and Fisher'(less space)s PLSD. The right maxillary deviation group tended to show laterally insufficient correction of the upper central incisor positions. This seems to result from insufficient correction of the lateral inclination of the occlusal plane, due to bony interferences. The left mandibular deviation group tended to show excessive forward positions of the right upper first molar after surgery. These results suggest that the operator's positions are liable to influence the treatment results in facial asymmetry cases. Therefore, in the orthognathic surgery of cases with facial asymmetry, additional reference points are needed in surgical procedures in order to obtain more successful treatment results.
