The current method of determining the shear strength parameter φ', based on the inclination of the K_f-line (p-q plot), even through widely used, can lead to invalid results if the limitation of the testing and computing procedures are not acknowledged. From the mechanics stand point, the method appears to be valid only for soils exhibiting a specific failure mechanism, however, according to the available published literature the method has been adopted to a wide variety of soils. The indiscreminate use of the K_f-line procedure can indeed lead to unrealistic results i.e., φ' approaching 90°in the case of some organic soils. An attempt is made on experimental basis to show the limitation of the K_f-line procedure. A failure criterion is suggested in order to avoid unworthy results.
