Gloss Measurement on Painted Surfaces

A method of gloss measurement which can obtain physical quantities closely associated with psychological gloss intervals was investigated. Sensory evaluation by a modified paired compar-ison method was used to prepare a series of several standard samples with appropriate gloss intervals. The gloss of these samples was measured using an apparatus that senses the distinct-ness of the image of a reflected knife edge pattern. The maximum tangent slope of the dark-to-bright transition curve for the image correlates linearly with the gloss intervals. The linearity becomes better for higher spatial resolution and the sensitivity becomes higher for a large float-ing range between the sample and the image. Blurring of the reflected images is discussed in rela-tion to the roughness of the reflecting surfaces
