Ultra-High-Vacuum Purification of Large Niobium Crystals

The use of a bell-jar vacuum chamber for the ultra-high-vacuum high-temperature annealing of large diameter niobium crystals by induction heating is described. The pitfalls in preparing specimens for mass spectrographic analysis and the detrimental transient effects during cooling of specimens with a large heat capacity are illustrated and discussed. Tensile tests of sections cut from the large crystals were able to detect re-absorption of gases during cooling. The most likely source of this contamination is hydrogen. Procedures to avoid these difficulties are recommended.
