A thory of consolidation including secondary compression is proposed based on a peds model. This theory is based on the following assumptions : (1) The soil structures are assumed to be composed of an assemblage of peds. It is accordingly assumed that during primary compression, the compression of macro pores, which are formed between peds and not between soil particles, occurs due to the influence of effective stress between peds and then during secondary compression, the compression of micro pores formed within peds occurs due to the influence of incrcasccl effcctive stress between peds on peds. (2) The peds are assumed to be linear elastic bodies. The behaviour of peds during consolidation is described by a function that is analogous to the function of degree of consolidation in the time factor obtained from the solution of Terzaghi's equation of consolidation. The governing equation with respect to effective stress between peds is derived and solved by means of a Laplace transformation technique. To examine the reliability of results obtained based on this theory, the settlements measured in a standard oedometer test are compared with those predicted by the theory. A good agreement is achieved to 10 or 20 in the time factor.
