For the purpose of knowing the applicability of a multichannel impedance pneumography to detect the regional lung volume change. the sensitivity and crosstalk between the electrodes were analyed on the impedance torso model of human thorax with the aid of three dimentional finite element method. The analysis based on an impedanc matrix among each electrode array revealed that the best sensitivity could be obtained by driving the all electrodes parallely with equal voltage, and the minimum crosstalk could be expected by driving single electrode pair sequentially. Then, we analyzed how the difience among the lung capacities contained in the upper, middle and lower zones would reflect on the impedance change detected by the electrodes placed at the chest wall. The model simulation suggested the possibility that the regional lung volume change might be detected by the surface electrodes. The experiment studies performed on several human subjects, in which a newly depveloped 16-channel impedance pneumograph was adopted, proved the validity of the simulation. It was concluded that the multi-channel impedance pneumography is usefull for the diagnosis of several lung diseases. Furthermore, we found that the type of ventilation, i. e., abdominal or thoracic respiration, affect little on the impedance change of the lower lung zone. This finding would contribute to the respiration monitoring of patients.
