Double-yield-surface models for soils, i. e. elasto-plastic models which have double yield surfaces with double potential surfaces, may be useful to model consistently the behaviour of soils. Finite element formulation for these models is, however, much more complicated than that for single-yield-surface models. The Cam-Clay model is a representative single-yield-surface model. It is pointed out, however, that it may be re-interpreted as a kind of simplified form of double-yield-surface model based on Ohta's model whose basic assumption is superimposing dilatancy on consolidation (i. e. volume change due to mean normal stress).
