The application of a birefringent plate to magneto-optical disk readout system is described: The so-called walk-off plate is tilted 45° with respect to an incident converging light beam. Refraction at the crystal surfaces as well as the walk-off effect cause not only separation into an ordinary and an extraordinary polarized light beam, but also beam aberrations such as astigmatism and coma. We utilized beam separation and astigmatism to combine the functions of the polarizing beam splitter and cylindrical optics of a conventional magneto-optical disk system into a single optical element. The comparison between the carrier-to-noise ratios measured when using the conventional readout optics and when employing the birefringent plate indicates that applying the birefringent plate to magneto-optical disk readout systems is feasible.
