Thermoluminescence [TL] and electron spin resonance [ESR] of fossil calcite shells were investigated. The TL emission spectrum consists of a wide spectral band at 600 nm. The first- and second-glow growths observed at 240℃ exhibit a common supralinear behavior, while the first- and second-ESR growths also exhibit a common saturation behavior. The total doses estimated from TL were consistent with that from ESR. Ages estimated from TL are compared with ones estimated by other methods. It is revealed that TL dating is useful for fossil calcite shells from about 5×10^5 years ago to recent.
