A Mossbauer study of Vermiculite collected from different regions of India in its natural form has been carried out. The spectra were recorded at room temperature after firing the vermiculite samples at different temperatutes (up to 1100 ℃) in air. The dependence of the Mossbauer paramemters. Isomer shift quadrupole splitting, and relative percentage of the Mossbauer effect, has been measured as a function of the firing temperature. There are two transition temperatures. At which a sudden increase of decrease of the Mossbauer parameters was observed. The results agree with earlier work on Kaolinite. An X-ray fluorescence (XRF)study has also been made in order to find the amounts of trace elements relative to iron in the vermiculite samples.
