The effects of the transverse drift of carriers on the opration of piezoelectric semicondrctor SAW convolvers are investigated theoretically and experimentally. The structure of the convolvers consists of a surface layer with low conductivity on a substrate with infinite conductivity. Theoretical analysis shows that the drift of carriers toward both the surface and the substrate enhances the M-value by up to more than ten times, that the drift toward the surface reduces the propagation loss of the SAW, and that the drift toward the substrate amplifies the SAW by about 10 np/m at 30 MHz. The experimental results for photoconductive CdS samples show that the enhancement of the M-value and the reduction of the propagation loss actually do occur.
