Stable columnar baroclinic vortices are produced by spin-up of a continuously stratified rotating fluid. The horizontal structure of the vortices can be approximated by the Gaussian vortex with a characteristic radius close to the internal deformation radius. The vertical structure is a linear combination of the barotropic, the first baroclinic, and the second baroclinic modes with the former two being dominant. A linear stability analysis shows that the observed structure lies in or near the stability region in the relevant parameter space.
