Thermocapillary-driven convection in a thin liquid layer up to 1.5 mm in depth heated from below was investigated experimentally. Temperature gradient inclined to the free surface was applied to the layer. Two kinds of base flows were considered : a linear flow and a return flow, as indicated by Smith & Davis (J. Fluid Mech. 132,119-144,1983). In the case of the linear base flow. several kinds of flow patterns were observed depending upon the relative magnitude of the perpendicular and parallel temperature gradient. Those patterns were quite similar to the ones observed in the return base flow case, despite of the difference in base flow structure. In the present study, special attention was paid upon a pattern of longitudinal roll structure. Its occurrence condition and its wavelength were investigated through the linear stability analysis as well as the experiments.
